Entertaining the Shrew
Liz-C — Tue, 04/08/2008 - 10:38
Alright, so the beginning part of the morning was interesting. Well, as interesting as it could be. As it crept later though, it became less and less interesting. It's because I am not necessarily working on what I would like to.
It's quite difficult to start your own game studio and also work in the financial sector to make ends meet. Now, its not that I don't enjoy finances and such (I did try for my SEC Series 6 certification when I was 17), but I am essentially doing long-put-off data entry at the moment, i.e. "Here's a ton of stuff we haven't looked at in 10 or more years, go through it all and enter it into our (fairly) new system!" or something similar, normally having to do with items that haven't been looked at much less thought about in more than a decade.
Either way, I felt it would be good if I took a few minutes here to describe my state and a little more about me.
So, I read a few entertainment news blogs to give my brain a break from names and numbers, Gama and Kotaku are my main game ones, but there is another dirty, little, secret one I refer to in times of great need.
I do have the sick curiosity about celebrities as many women who buy tabloids do, but the other thing I take in is the state of Hollywood. I mean our society is pushed and pulled by a lot of what happens or what is going on nowadays in Hollywood or with our favorite celebs. Ask yourself how many times in the past week you've heard about Briney Spears or her sister Jamie Lynn or Paris or Bragelina or Tom Cruise. It's sad, but unless you are like a very small percentage that just avoids all updated media, you've heard one or a few of these names at least twice. To study them is like studying the most extreme cases of the people around us, and sometimes the celebs are easier to pinpoint and learn from for their eccentricity.
The one thing you can also learn from TMZ is that their talkbacks are perhaps the worst of the worst on the internet. I honestly don't understand some of the people that post on there. It's like watching 'Idiocracy' come to life. That is essentially all I can say about that.
You might also ask me, why don't you play games then if you need a break? I would love to, but this being a financial institution, they have proxies and Websense on that block many sites. I do get the chance during lunch at times to visit Addicting Games and play some Bowman. Because I like shooting things.
What I mostly do when not checking on the news is actually working to further production on our next game. Undead Invaders still has a few bugs to be worked out and I want to add a high score table, and I plan on doing those over the next few weeks. We just need to get cracking on our next project. I have a feeling in my bones about it.
Alright back to converting files and such. I might be back to discuss a little on Peter Molyneux's recent interview regarding his worries about multi-million dollar games. You can see the Kotaku write up here or go directly to the full article here.
