A Tip From Days Gone By

So, in my house we have this really old kitsch-y fridge. A GE Americana that came with the house we are living in right now. Made sometime in the 60's, its a french door fridge with the freezer on the bottom, the best thing about it is the utility shelf the separates the fridge from the freezer sections.
This section is where we leave our fresh veggies like potatoes, onions, etc and our bread box. It is the happiness for holding stuff you actually want to remember. There were a few unfortunate things about the fridge...
The thing that you would notice about our fridge when you look inside of it is that it seems really tiny. That's because it is. The depth on our fridge is actually 6" shorter than most new fridges. you cannot even put a plate of food in the fridge. It is awful in that way.
The freezer doesn't have much extra on depth over the fridge section and the freezer has an auto ice maker that never stops running though it is not hooked up to a water line. Nothing seals on the fridge either, I guarantee we are losing electricity like gang-busters to this thing.
The most recent problem with it started last week, for some reason the fridge decided to over cool itself by a good ten degrees freezing everything. We turn the cooling element down to try to unfreeze everything and it did that really well. We started to notice that everything in the fridge wasn't cool enough, so we reset the cooling element to the temp it was when it was freezing everything. Unfortunately, after some spoiled milk, we realized that our fridge had finally died.
So, today we went searching for a cheap, new fridge, hopefully not needing to take out a home-improvement store credit card to do so. We did find one at Appliance Factory Outlet which tends to sell some slightly damaged new merchandise, which ours was. $500 off an LG french door fridge. Whoo! LG baby, love LG stuff.
Unfortunately, we have to wait till Wednesday to have it delivered. So in the mean time we have to keep what's in the broken fridge section cool enough and thank gods we are so near Halloween.
Remember this if you even need to cool your fridge while you are waiting for repairs or a new one. Get a 10-20 pound block of Dry Ice.
If you have ever been around parents or Grandparents that always, *always* refer to a refrigerator as an Ice Box... Well, that's because before there were cooling elements in refrigerators, there was Dry Ice and Ice Boxes to keep food cool. Most grocery stores still sell it but you have to be 18 to purchase.
So, we will have to keep to the Dry Ice until Wednesday sometime. At least the food is back to a state where we can save it.
